What a mess that word is, it can mean that you are just “jewish” in a religious sense by subscribing to the religion, like saying someone is christian, and it can mean just “jewish” by genes, in a genetic group/ethnic group, or both at the same time. But there are different genetic groups that are caled jewish, luckily they are pretty well categorized, like the sephardic jews, the ashkenazi jews, etc.

I think the reason they are all called “jews” is because they all have their origin in Israel from a common genetic group, and because the history of these groups are all linked because they usually did not and still do not intermix freely like other ethnic groups, and they stayed cohesive by religion and culture. Even though now most ashkenazi jews are not religious, they typically marry other ashkenazi jews, and have a common culture

Ethiopian Jews do not cluster near other Middle Eastern Jewish populations, They genetically cluster near Cushitic & Ethiosemitic popualtions (Somalis, Habeshas, Agaws, Oromos,etc). Converting to another religion =/= being apart of that ethnic group.
