That's because when you're skinny you look more "elongated". But when you're bulked or fat you look more compact and short, even if you're the same height as the skinny guy.

Getting lean would improve the aesthetics a lot because it would change some proportions, and it would reduce the distracting sensation of fat pad compression anywhere on your body.
