There's absolutely no reason to be proud of something you have not achieved by your hard work . I don't see anything to be proud of being born in a country or being born in a particular race. You shouldn't be self hating on the contrary.

Catholicism may not be as progressive as Protestantism (thanks for giving women rights), but they still contributed. The church kept monasteries around which produced writing and stored many great artifacts. There was never a "dark age". Even Visagothic Spain was very cultured.
