Everyone is always saying that braces are bad, but what other options do I have?

Hello, I'm 16 and I live in a developed country but with not a lot of dentistry options. I have a moderate overbite with some crowding on my lower teeth. Right now I have palate expanders and then the plan is to go onto braces. Everyone is saying that braces recede your face but what else do I do? Here is an idea of what my lower jaw looks like. After my palate expansion is done, I think the gaps will be too wide for Invisalign. Help.

This is not a looksmaxing forum, go for realself.com

They don't make it recessed. They prevent forward growth- which is crucial since most forward growth happens in puberty- which is why orthodontics are important from an early age.

I don't understand the logic of braces messing up your entire face. I think it's just cope tbh.

I got you. So ideally I will want to have braces at like 17 maybe when most of my forward growth is done? When is peak forward growth during puberty?

I've got an overbite as well. They're gonna make you wear rubber bands which will pull your mandible forward but your maxilla backward for the most time effective results. To prevent the maxilla from being pulled backward and downward for correction, request TADs (orthodontic implants) which are anchored farther up in the maxillary structure and thus don't pull your upper maxilla backward as much or at all. This way you're just experiencing mandibular advancement and hopefully no maxillary recession.

Why bimax?

If he has an overbite he would only need a BSSO to advance his lower jaw, right?
because the overbite often goes hand in hand with, or is caused by downswing. Asymmetries are also in most cases caused by recession and downswing as the structures are bend to fit into less space/ inappropriate space.

For sure! I'll look into that. When he described the plan he didn't say anything about rubber bands, so next time I see him, I'll ask him. Maybe because I have palate expanders I won't need rubberbands? I don't know but thanks for your input.

It's odd he didn't mention rubber bands, they are the ones which provide the corrective force to move the maxillas, braces themselves just move teeth, they can't push/pull maxillas on their own. As for palate expanders, it depends which type you're getting. You can have the ones that are just applied on your teeth and only move them, not the skeletal structure, and you have the ones that split the skull's suture and change the maxilla itself. In any case, they don't move teeth/bone forward/backward, they only widen the maxilla. Ask your orthodontist about rubber bands, perhaps there is a method of correction we're not aware of!

i got them and i don't think they helped

The he would need CCW Rotation of both jaws, right?

correct. if the mandible is jammed into the TMJ it can rotate into its correct position when theres place. But if its just underdeveloped it needs bsso and possibly genio for the tongue

Any idea on how to reverse the damage done by rubber bands?
