A doctor is facing jail after attempting to rid a nurse of "evil spirits" in an exorcism ritual he learnt on YouTube.
Hossam Metwally, of Laceby Road, rendered his colleague and wife Kelly Wilson critically ill and in a deep coma after he had injected her with dangerous drugs in a Grimsby clinic.
The 60-year-old on trial at Sheffield Crown Court in June, but a blanket ban on reporting proceedings meant it couldn't be revealed until now.
He originally denied nine offences, including three involving administering anaesthetic drugs which endangered the life of Kelly Wilson, three of supplying controlled drugs and medicines to her, possessing a controlled drug with intent to supply and fraud.
But on July 29, well into an eight-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court, he changed his plea to guilty on the fraud charge.
The jury, reduced to 10 because of problems, convicted him of the other eight offences yesterday.
On Friday, he also pleaded guilty to two charges of voyeurism against two female patients, which were due to be the subject of a second trial which will now not take place, triggering the lifting of the restrictions.
Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said that Metwally had been convicted on the "clearest possible evidence" and added that, in 29 years as a barrister and about 12 as a judge, he had never known such a "bizarre" case.
The trial heard Metwally had been performing an exorcism on Miss Wilson to rid her of evil spirits.
He was "prepared to endanger her life" and she was found gravely ill and in a deep coma after he had been injecting her with dangerous drugs at The Lincs Pain Clinic on Laceby Road, Grimsby in July 2019.
It was feared by hospital staff that she would die because of a total organ failure.
She had been found by relatives lying on a bed in an upstairs bedroom and was wearing an oxygen mask but was pale and had a weak pulse. Metwally was lying next to her.
A cannula had been inserted into her chest and video footage later found by police showed Metwally repeatedly injecting her through it.
He could also be heard chanting on film and claimed he helped her "out of kindness".
Miss Wilson had worked for him at the clinic, and it was at first a doctor-nurse relationship but that changed in 2015. Metwally said he thought they had married in 2017.
"She was a beautiful, nice girl who became a monster who wanted to attack me," he insisted.
Metwally said that he contacted an Islamic association and was referred to someone who practised Ruqya, to exorcise evil spirits, in Liverpool.
He watched and learned about the ritual on YouTube, including the concepts of the evil eye and black magic.
He watched examples of it on Facebook and saw the response. "I performed a Ruqya to help her out of kindness," he claimed.
Verses from the Koran were recited and holy water from Mecca was used, along with different oils.
Defence barrister Matthew McDonagh said that Metwally had no previous convictions and was of good character. He was likely to be "erased" as a doctor.
Metwally will be sentenced at a later date. Judge Richardson said he would be jailed: "The defendant needs to be under no doubt that the sentence will be of some substance, come what may."
