Taking a gap year just makes sense, especially with its relative normalization over time. Not only do you have a whole year to work and get money before university, giving you more financial liberty, but you can essentially do whatever you want. Since you're not technically a uni student you won't be looked down on if you live with your parents (but obv you can move out if you want to bc you can now work full time). You gain experience working, and you have a year of time without school breathing down your back to essentially reinvent yourself. If you don't want to work and your parents will support you just stay home and do all the cope softmaxxes, YOU HAVE A FUCKING YEAR TO REINVENT YOURSELF BEFORE YOU GET EXPOSED TO COMPLETELY NEW PEOPLE IN UNI.
It also makes sense because you can seamlessly blend into new friend groups many caste levels above your highschool group; they will assume you were always the softmaxxed gymmaxxed chad that the year has transformed you into. Furthermore, you have no distractions from friends to improve, (humans are naturally jealous people, they don't want anyone to succeed by themselves), and you can distance yourself from your loser khhv friends.
tl;dr reinvent yourself over the course of a year of free time OR get money to be less stressed in uni
