It happens all the time in coffee shops. Probably been asked what I'm reading by 10+ guys. They're just trying to make friends or be social, but it's annoying when you only really want to talk to jb.

Yes, do it all the time at university. If I see an indication they might be interested in the same things (for example we are in the same student club) I take the chance and chat them up. I’ve already gained multiple close friends this way
