Joseph Smith Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader and founder of Mormonism and the Latter Day Saint movement. When he was 24, Smith published the Book of Mormon. By the time of his death, 14 years later, he had attracted tens of thousands of followers and founded a religion that continues to the present with millions of global adherents.

Not too difficult, just start preaching left and right and you could get some followers, there are tons of small cults that fly under the radar, like Charles Manson's cult for example - there are countless of other people who have just several or dozens of followers who really believe their leader knows The Truth and would do anything for him - work for free, gather money, offer their bodies, etc..

Manson didnt really run a cult tbh, more like he used and abused druggies. Pumped teens up on drugs and made them do crazy shit and probably withheld more if they didnt follow instruction. Jim Jones is a prime example of cult leader, made low class desperate people sell their houses and lives for his dream. Eventually making 900+ rope

The Manson Family is considered a cult, sure an unconventional one with a niche appeal, many cults use brain washing or drugs to control their followers.

it's not hard nor easy, but a requirement for a cult/religion leader to have is a high iq, has to be good as manipulation and has to be charming and the most important one is that they have to be charismatic

How do you increase your charisma?
be nicer, form bonds and relationship with people so you can convince them to trust you and therefore you can exploit and manipulate them, there are tons of books that go in depth about stuff like this you can find some your self

I wanna start a cult where we live in the woods and consume magic mushrooms every week

you have to be intelligent and charismatic

so for you impossible :feelshmm:

Easy to start one but hard to get a large following, for the most efficient result it's better to start a denomination of another religion (especially Christianity), find a gullible, uneducated or just plain dumb audience, Hire a few actors to give testimonials of your miracles or perform staged miracles or exorcism with paid actors, promise some kind of future material or spiritual prosperity, then profit.

I've seen this happen hundreds of times

a entirely new religion would be almost impossible nowadays since religons depend on prophets, miracles etc, all things that were "possible" in the past(in the sense that people could not entirely dismiss those things by that time), but not very possible nowadays
