How are you able to tell if someone is recessed from a front or side picture?

Imo it’s actualy the other way around. You can instantly subconsciously tell when something is “wrong” anything that is wrong is not formed properly it’s mal or deformed. We live in an age where deformity is the norm. And proper form is so rare that it by itself is seen as very attractive.

Cephalometrics (angles and lengths between various skull points) using cephalogramm (lateral x-ray of head, basically) or CT is the right answer, although, you can evaluate it to some degree on properly taken photos. Ond of classic indicators is "facial equator line", which goes from nasion (the most concave point between eyebrows and nose) down parallel to Frankfort horizontal plane (upper ear canal to lowest point of orbital bone, basically). It's, of course, not ideal and prone to errors - nasion may be too forward or orbitals too recessed/too hard to get from photo if lighting is not suitable).
