Well, back in my days ugly kids and teens literally had nothing else to do: there was no tv, no internet, no video games, no smartphones, no social media, etc...
If they were also rejected by their peers, the last to be picked at sports, avoided by girls, etc., then the only thing left for them was to study and get good grades. Today, though the world is much more complicated, there are a lot of more distractions and it's not that easy to study anymore when you have the internet, social media, games, etc.
