Yes, back then being a serial killer was the norm. Nowadays being a mass shooter is the norm and they want to go out with a bang for what makes the most headlines. Serial killers and mass shooters are mostly expressing themselves on how they feel about the world, they just do it differently.

No. Most serial killers were complete psycho, they liked to kill / trick / make their victim suffer. Think hunters.
They chase victims like preys and were addicted to the feeling of ending one's life with their own hands.

Mass shooters are mostly teen loners who got bullied / are desperate (social anxiety, anger etc) and want to end their life.
But they don't wanna end roping alone with nothing left from them, they want revenge / to be remembered.
So they use their death wish as a tool to that end : killing people, be remembered and then... Suicide.
