Is it normal for there to be silence when you are with someone?

I have started to socialise more but I don't understand whether it is awkward if there is silence when you are with someone. I am fine when there is more than 1 person with me, but when I am just with 1 other person I find it really awkward.

I was out walking with a new friend and most of the time we were talking but other times it was just silent and I felt really awkward. I always feel like I should start a new conversation just to clear the awkwardness but often that just makes the situation more awkward because what I said was forced and not very relevant/valuable.

What do you guys think? Is it normal for there to be times when you are not in conversation?

It depends on how close you are. At first this is awkward. Usually you should be fun and have a lot to talk about since you are new. Make experiences and so on

at some point when you are really used to the person just being in together without doing or saying something is fine. Like you don’t have to talk to your sister all day. You will appreciate her anyways. Just like she appreciates you. In a healthy family.

this is normal tbh, i had a friend for years that when we were alone without other people it was awkward on both sides tbh, he was actually autistic though.

If it's a new friend then it's completely normal.
