What actually satiates a human being?

It can’t be happiness, since it’s fleeting.

Some people say starting a family, and virtues that have to do with something beyond yourself are what satiates you.. But then why are there people with seemingly perfect families that feel unfulfilled?

it is severing your ties with the world being a monk that is what truly satiates you

True, if I had the willpower of a monk I’d use that to become a millionaire or something anyways, which actually shows the problem perfectly jfl

Nothing does, if there was something that satiated us all purpose and meaning would cease to exist and our lives would be over. Life inherently seeks satiation endlessly, so much so that could be the definition of life itself.

True but I can’t help but think there’s more than just chase chase chase consume consume consume

There has to be a way out of this hell hole, that doesn’t involve me being an animal, that involves my own free will.

Look up what the hedonic treadmill is
im familiar, but the solutions online are kind of useless, basically amounts to just be grateful bro! or dude focus on having a growth mindset!

if all that was required was a mental shift then 99% suffering would have made it out of their circumstance by now

part of my problem is that I’m starting to lose hope in the ability to actually step off this hedonic treadmill in the first place

But I suppose this problem would eventually manifest itself as a self fulfilling prophecy, but is it really?

To me at least it’s not about stepping off and just dropping everything, it’s about thinking as a human what you really want your life to mean and putting your natural craving for comfort, pleasure, happiness aside when necessary, knowledge of the hedonic treadmill is a good tool for this so you don’t become trapped

good stuff tbh

It’s probably impossible to halt hedonic adaptation, or hedonic cravings/primers/drivers
But it is possible as human beings with consciousness to put to remain conscientious and put them to the side.

But how consistently and how willingly is what I think should be asked. And to what extent is this genetic and mutable.
