Join a social group of some sort. I went for quite a few. Eg. Pool/snooker club, local politcal group, sports, martial arts, literature, etc. Then cut down to 2 that you really fit in with. Its alot easier to meet people as youve already got a shared interest and its a very natural way of getting along, whereas meeting someone randomly is gonna be awkward and theyre probably gonna be overly polite.
