Motivation- doing the work because you feel like it and it energizes you
Discipline- doing the work even if you don't

In the current self-development space, discipline is thrown out and said so much it's basically a buzzword. Discipline this, discipline that, the key is discipline. Motivation ain't shit.

However, in reality, many people achieved ENORMOUS amounts of success on motivation ALONE. Yes, motivation, they love doing the work.
People like Arnold Schwarzenegger who said he didn't even need to use discipline because he always felt hungry. He "wanted it more". Literally. Look where it got him.
Mr Beast, says that all he ever thought about was youtube, obsessing over youtube, even as a kid, until this very day. He didn't grit his teeth and "discipline" himself to making videos. He was just so maniacally wired and attached to youtube that the success, fame, and money was bound to be given to a guy like him.

Now the flipside,

There are also people who made it VERY, VERY FAR through SHEER discipline and willpower.
David Goggins, the poster boy for the discipline movement himself. Through self-imposed rigorous training of the mind, he was able to unlock superhuman physical feats. Sugar Ray Robinson, one of the greatest boxers said that he had no interest or passion for the sport of boxing at all. To him it was a business, an activity that brings in money, he treated it as such. Yet still revered as one of the greats in his sport.
These people didn't "love" what they were doing, they didn't feel "motivated". But they were still able to reach the levels of success that many aspire to attain.

Now, I deduce that relying on being the "motivation/passion" type is only for those born with it. With some weird ass inclination and wiring that makes them love something so particular. Dudes with this inclination can burn through and grind and literally love it and feel so alive. Making them easily achieve better than average status in no time. The downside with this type of wiring though is that if you're one of the dorks who have this passion for weird ass shit and primally meme stuff like "getting good at yoyo" or "being a balloon expert" is that you're pretty much stuck with it.

If the field you're in is more of a means to an end, something that isn't very organically inspiring to you, then it's best to be the "discipline" type. To grind hard, to go against your wiring, to just push through. This shit works because humans naturally adapt to anything. So with enough grinding, your brain will adjust to it. This is how it will work out in the long term. But also, this approach works in the short term as well, as it ties directly in with neuroscience, saying that thoughts, emotions, and perceptions are extremely hard to control with the mind itself, but best set into order through behavior or action. Meaning that if you don't feel like doing it, just doing it anyway will prime your brain to "feel" like doing it.

TLDR:
Motivation is something you're born with
Discipline is something you can build up
Rely on motivation if you're a weirdo
Rely on discipline if you're an NPC

motivation is something you can get, i used to have no interest in martial arts but now i love it and train daily

I think you can only have true motivation as a kid. or perhaps when you discover a great opportunity. the real oopsie is when the school system/parents force you to to ldar instead of develop and sell said motivation.
