About 8 thousand years ago some random guy was born with a random mutation that gave him blue eyes.

That one guy’s SMV was so high that the trait spread all over Europe faster than the dark plague. To the point where in many northern European countries virtually EVERYONE has that trait.

This can mean one of two things:

The trait offered a significant survival advantage or the trait offered a significant advantage in sexual selection.

I have brown eyes and have been to northern Canada in the winter. I could see perfectly fine. I don’t think anything else needs to be said…

Daily reminder, light eyes are actually worse than brown eyes fitness wise. They are more sensitive to light, and possible have higher chances of getting some ocular disease because of it, but even then it's more aesthetic.

What he meant is that brown eyes and blue eyes are not equal in health/function. Although the difference is minimal and barely even noticeable, since blue eyes are more sensitive to light they are more prone to some eye diseases.

So in evolution, if all that counted was “the survival of the fittest”, only taking health and functionality into consideration, brown eyes would be preferred, even if the fitness advantage is minimal.

So his final point was that in spite of that, blue eyes were still selected for because that’s just how much beauty matters.
