Obviously the rich classes will always have an element of hedonism, but under patriarchal systems there is always an element of restraint. Historically, in many cultures the ruling class was even more socially conservative than the poor.
A lot of the moral rot that's infested the Western (and developed country's) ruling classes is actually a consequence of feminism and allowing women to influence the wider culture. Unlike men, women have no sense of responsibility and don't give a shit about society. They're adult children, basically.
People mock the Taliban for their brutal repression of women, but much of their so-called 'backwards' laws actually make plenty sense when you think about it
