The Balkan peninsula is at a very unfortunate location. Nations at the borders of civilizations often suffer from war, and in the case of the Balkans it’s not two but three civilizations clashing against each other (Western Christian - backed up by Western powers, Eastern Orthodox - backed up by Russia, and Islam - backed up by Turkey & other Muslim countries).

Balkan’s mountaneous geography already made it’s people divided (each valley being a bit different than the others), but it’s the foreign great powers who caused brother wars just to further strengthen their sphere of influence in the region.
