Christian Jambert, born on 26 November 1940 in Fourchambault in the Nièvre region and found dead on 4 August 1997 in Auxerre, was a French gendarme.

He had a decisive role in the investigation of the case of the missing persons in the Yonne. He is also known for the disturbing circumstances in which he was found dead.

Seven rapes and murders were committed in Auxerre and the surrounding area between 1977 and 1979 on young women from the DDASS with mild mental disabilities aged between 16 and 27yo.

As early as 1979, Gendarme Jambert, who investigated the case of the disappeared from the Yonne, had suspected Émile Louis of being behind these disappearances. On 20 February 1980, he was put in charge of the case.

Charged with the murder of Sylviane Lesage, Émile Louis was dismissed in 1984 despite the relationship he had with the victim, as demonstrated by Constable Jambert. The case of the Yonne disappearances was also dismissed, despite the fact that Constable Jambert had again demonstrated links between Émile Louis and all of the disappeared.

In 1984, Christian Jambert sent a report to the Auxerre public prosecutor's office implicating Émile Louis and sadomasochistic pimping networks in the Yonne region that exploited girls from the DDASS.

Public Prosecutor René Meyer did not open any information for lack of evidence but informally asked the gendarme to continue the investigation. The report is lost and will not be found until 1996.

Émile Louis was finally arrested, sentenced on appeal in 2006 in Paris to life imprisonment with 18 years' security and imprisoned until his death in 2013. Christian Jambert's contribution to the arrest of Émile Louis was unanimously recognized by all those involved in the case. During Émile Louis' trial, he was described by police officers as "an outstanding investigator, a professional model and a remarkable personality".

On 4 August 1997, the gendarme was found dead. He allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself twice in the head, two days before his hearing as a main witness in the Émile Louis case, a case linked to the Appoigny torture case, the investigation into his life which was finally to come to a successful conclusion.

The file was closed until Isabelle, Christian Jambert's daughter, intrigued by the developments in the Émile Louis case, decided to request a new investigation into the "causes of death" of her father.

In April 2004, the public prosecutor's office opened a judicial inquiry against X for murder on the basis of an initial autopsy report judging the two bullet impacts to be incompatible with suicide. During the autopsy of Christian Jambert's body at the Paris Forensic Medical Institute, two holes were found in the gendarme's skull corresponding to the inlets of two projectiles fired from two perpendicular angles.

In February 2011, his death was dismissed. "Contrary to what the ballistics expert from a first panel of experts had said, the rifle found near the body, and whose operation had been modified by Christian Jambert so that the weapon could fire in a burst, was indeed the one that fired two bullets whose fragments had been found in the skull of the former gendarme," said the Auxerre prosecutor.
