Jealousy: They are jealous of the subhuman that ascended so they make up a scenario in their mind where the girl is only with him for money or some other selfish reason to feel better for themself.

Not shattering their world view: If other subhuman are able to do it, then it must be your own fault that you can't be able to do it. So when you see someone who made it it shatters your belief, since you believed looks were the only determining factor.
