JELLY FISH - Jellyfish, also known as sea jellies, are the medusa-phase of certain gelatinous members of the subphylum Medusozoa, which is a major part of the phylum Cnidaria. Jellyfish are mainly free-swimming marine animals, although a few are anchored to the seabed by stalks rather than being motile. - wikipedia
SOME/MOST INFORMATION IS PROBABLY INCORRECT BECAUSE IM NOT BOTHERED TO SPEND HOUR RESEARCHING ABOUT JELLYFISHES
I will label some paragraphs with number that will include pictures at the end of the thread.
TYPES OF JELLYFISHES CLASSES(1)
There are 4 main types of jellyfish classes.
SCYPHOZOA: these are basically the true jellyfishes which have large jelly bodies and tentacles which they usually have a bell shaped medusa stage and can be found in open waters. Examples are a Moon jellyfish.(2)
HYDROZOA: Usually members of this class are singular or are in groups and have different life cycle which include both a polyp stages and a medusa stage. Some species example in this class are the Portuguese Man o’ War.(3)
CUBOZOA: Which are jellyfishes with Cube shaped Medusas and good developed eyes. These jellyfish are known for potent venom and include the…Box jellyfish what else?(4)
STAUROZOA: These are jellyfish which
Aren't so common with the others, these are attached to a substrates with a unique appearance. Which i wont really talk about.
HABITATS
You can find jellyfish everywhere, slight over exaggeration but some live in costal waters, some live in open waters or deep down underwater. Some either live in freshwater or saltwater. some prefer cold some prefer warm there is really no specific I know of.
WHAT ARE MEDUSA AND POLYPS?
MEDUSA: This is the free swimming of jellyfishes with usually a umbrella shaped body. This form they have a bell shaped body and tentacles, basically “normal jellyfishes“. This is usually the reproductive stages where they will release eggs and sperms into the water, unlike yous KHHV.(5)
POLYPS: This is a sessile stages(organism attached to a part, immobile) which they attached to rocks or seaweed. They have a cylindrical shape and tentacles on the ends. They have asexual reproduction like medusa.(6)
SOME SPECIES ALTERNATE BETWEEN BOTH( POLYP TO MEDUSA).
WHAT DO THEY EAT?
I think they varies depending on the type but the usually eat small marine organisms such as plankton, fish larvae and sometime small crustacean if they encounter them. Some species are omnivorous and eat a mixture of microscopic plants and free floating protozoa and crustaceans.
ADAPTATIONS
most/all jellyfish have a nematocyst which are barbed tubes that give a paralysed sting. This is used a defensive mechanism to protect itself. Contact with their tentacles will inject thousand of needles into them.(7)
They have long tentacles for reaching out to prey and putting food in their mouth.
The shape of their bodies allow them to contract and propelled themself around in the water until it retract and they stop and do it again and agin agin ahzz.
They do not breath but the epidermis of jellyfish allows the diffusion of oxygen.
HOW DO THEY REPRODUCE AND WHAT DO BABY JELLYFISH LOOK LIKE?
There are 2 types of reproduction, sexual and asexual reproduction which are different and produce different jellyfish.
SEXUAL REPRODUCTION: Now adult jellyfish(medusa) release eggs and sperms into the water which then fertilisation occurs externally from the jellyfish. Then the result is a larvae called a planulae which are small free swimming blobs in water(8)
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION: Jellyfish that produce like this are usually polyps, from a process called pudding which produce new polyps that grow off their sides.
Now for planulae as they settle they develop into polyps which turn into medusa then finishing life cycle but each jellyfish is different and this thread is already long enough.
