R1A haplogroup
A quick overview of the R1a haplogroup
What is a Haplogroup ?
When defining what a haplogroup is we must first define what a haplotype is. The wikipedia page of haplogroup defines haplotype as follows: A haplotype is a group of alleles in an organism that are inherited together from a single parent. And a Haplogroup is just a group of similar haplotypes that share a common ancestor with a SNP mutation.
What is the R1a haplogroup ?
The r1a haplogroup is a Y-chromosome DNA haplogroup. It is distributed throughout eurasia expanding from as far west as scandinavia to south asia and south asia.
Where did the R1a haplogroup come from ?
This isn't fully known the exact area where it comes from but the common consensus is on the Eurasian steppe. The first skeleton to have the R1a haplogroup is found in eastern European hunter gatherers during the Mesolithic, while the earliest case of the R* haplogroup is found in upper Palaeolithic north Eurasians. Some contrarians like peter Underhill say there is a good case for it originate in modern day Iran. While some Hindu nationalist say it comes India (take this with a grain of salt)
above : the frequency of the R1a haplogroup in europe
Definitions
Alleles: each of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
SNP: occur when a single nucleotide (building block of DNA) is replaced with another
