Parents should focus on teaching and passing down skills. As you said, all beatings/shouting does is raise cortisol. It won’t teach them how to succeed in the real world. At best it’ll teach them to hide everything from their parents and therefore avoid interacting with them in a genuine manner if at all in the long run.
