Abuse actually was less common in past decades

Because a guy would only slap a girl if she constantly did some shit wrong. if a man got too physical she could easily talk to her extended family or even his to keep him in check or threaten beat his ass if he really was treating her awfully. People are more isolated from their extended family and wider community so it's easier to isolate a victim of abuse.

also since women had so much lower iq at that point in time (they weren't taught how to read) they were held less accountable. womens nature then was seen as so passive that if a wife poisoned her husband, at that point it was probably him treating her like shit or taking advantage of her kindness. so the stakes were more even back then.
