I saw a tweet from an NLP researcher who said that the job he had been doing for only 5 years, semantic parsing, is already dead.
AI will affect jobs in a way similar to the Lindy Effect or the FIFO (First In, First Out) formula. In other words, jobs that have been around for a shorter amount of time will go away first.
Consider jobs like AI researchers, AI engineers, software engineers, and data engineers, which are fairly new. These jobs are closely tied to the progress of AI and could be among the first to be taken over by machines as AI gets better. On the other hand, older jobs like plumbers, construction workers, HVAC specialists, teachers, and health care workers seem to be more stable, at least for now. Even professions that are often pointed out as disappearing, like lawyers and doctors, who have been around for thousands of years, follow this rule, although they suffer some degree of impact. The ones that remain standing in those fields after the destruction AI will cause will only have their lives made easier by the technology.
Newer jobs are often built around tasks that are easier for AI to do or that can be done over and over again. It's also possible that this trend will get even stronger as AI keeps getting better.
The Lindy Effect or First-In, First-Out (FIFO) apply to AI jobs.
