I keep my thumb and pinky nail long as an antisocial fashion statement. But in any sort of fight they'll just break, and I won't even realize it until the fight's over.

People don't feel things like scratching in a fight. It won't do anything whatsoever to slow them down. Last fight I was in I got my rib broken and I didn't even realize it was broken until about 15 minutes after the fight. Adrenaline won't allow people to feel scratches.
