"Do ut des" is a latin phrase that basically means "you scratch my back, I scratch yours".
Thats how altruism works, both directly and indirectly.
DIRECTLY
The most obvious one: I give you a gift so that
you perceive me as a good person, you are going to treat me better and return favors.
In .org terms
I rep you, you are going to rep me and perceive me as a good user.
INDIRECTLY
I do a good deed so that I can feel better about myself, to avoid guilt, while keeping a good self-image to others.
In .org terms
I help someone so that I can feel better about myself.
CONCLUSION
Everything we do is based on our own interest, and if you deny that you are nothing but a hypocrite.

Loneliness made me realize this simple concept. I didnt read any books, watched any videos. Just loneliness.
I am not trying to be edgy, larp high iq or anything like that but solitude makes you view the whole world from another perspective , it makes you realize a lot of things, more that you could ever think of.
But like everything in this world there is a bad side.
Solitude slowly ruins you.
