I think the idea is to repress "beastial desires", to show humans are more than their instincts. Religions claim The 7 Deadly Sins as to be avoided whenever possible, otherwise the world would be wild and chaotic like the animal kingdom. Animals actively practice all the "sins" I think they're based on lions

Pride: tribal groups ruling over territory, lion pride
Sloth: lounging around all day to preserve energy till need for hunt
Lust: alpha male breeds all
Gluttony: biting off more than you can chew - more than you need
Greed: taking the lion's share - hoarding resources
Wrath: annihilating anyone who contests you
Envy: desire to have what alpha has - causes wrath
