It really is. It can give you the drive to better yourself and do 'more' in all areas of your life, but at the same time you are filled with constant comparisons that steal your joy.
When you set out to be better and are more ambitious you tend to look at guys that are better than you (in whatever metric you are trying to improve), and although that can give you motivation to improve, it will always leave you unsatisfied because your reference point has shifted and you don't feel good enough relative to him.
That's why even if you've made good improvement you don't feel happy because you're constantly looking at that guy who is better than you. So even though you are objectively in a better position than you were before, you still feel inadequate because that guy is better than you.
You feel you need to get a faster car, more money, a bigger house, more status, a nicer watch, a hotter girlfriend, nicer holidays... the comparisons never end and even if you're a lot better off than most guys you don't appreciate what you have because you are constantly looking up at those guys better than you.
Even if you are Cristiano Ronaldo there is always a Lionel Messi. Even if you are Lionel Messi you are still a manlet. There is always someone better in someway and the delusions of grandeur I've had in my head for so long seem unrealistic and it's making me more miserable every passing day.
Ambition really is a curse.
