I don't see them doing it to favour a side. I think they did it for the transition itself. Society has gone through such a sharp transition from the Greatest Generation (WW2 Vets) + Silent Generation

But the fact that the roads have separated so much in such a short time, have widened the bounds for what people are.
Those generations I mentioned earlier.. back then there wouldn't be much disparity between the poles (left/right), as there is today.
