I like Shure earbuds/headphones. They are studio quality and way better then Sony, in my experience

I cringe hard when I see people wearing in public full-size headphones, earphones are better suited for this - smaller and more discreet.

Shure has noise cancelling ear buds and headphones. I've used both. The ear buds block out more noise then the Sony headphones I've tried

You don't want noise cancelling in public -it's very easy to get in an accident, get hit by a car, be pickpocketed, etc. Also active noise cancelling kinda sucks - it's only useful for constant droning sounds like engine noise, road or wind noise, etc., it's not that good for sudden sounds like voices or various sharp, short noises.

Then you might want noise isolating headphones, not noise cancelling - these are either big, over-the-ear headphones that clamp tight to your head and keep outside noises out, or in-ear headphones that go deep inside your ear canal - some can be fitted with foam ear tips for better isolation, one of the best combinations would be Etymotic earphones with Comply foam tips, these are long and thin earphones that can be pushed pretty deep inside your ear.
