Are strength gains pretty much completely down to muscle mass?

I see a lot of shit online about building lean muscle vs muscle mass. Is this just building type 1 muscle fibers over type 2?

Is it actually possible to use specific steroids to encourage the muscle to build more densely then sparse?

While it'll obv vary per person I'm wondering if muscle mass pretty much 100% = strength or can you train for strength while encouraging size less?

Ideally I'd like to keep a lean look. I imagine being lean & also strong af compared to similarly sized people is a huge halo & allows you to perform difficult athletic tasks

Both are highly correlated and you will get bigger the stronger you get,

but strength training targets the nervous system a bit more than simply cell size (hypertrophy).

If it is this way then faggots @ internet lie.
Why the fuck some dudes claim benchpressing 100kg while I barely lift 70kg
@ lean 80 kg bodymass
god why

I've always heard its either
1. Your muscles get larger, aka more muscle tissue which results in more strength
2. Your nervous system gets better at recruiting the muscle you already have
So you can get stronger without getting bigger, but its not really that your muscle tissue gets more dense

You can get stronger by having better cns or by getting more muscle volume. I think it's a myth saying low reps give more strength and higher is for volume. I think it's dependent on the person.

They're correlated but not perfectly. Training style, genetics, drug use all impact size vs strength

almost everything written about muscle fiber types and "sarcoplasmic vs myofibrillar" hypertrophy is total nonsense. Absolutely infuriatingly dumb shit.

All other factors being equal, a bigger muscle is a stronger muscle. Now all other factors are never equal but for practical purposes your muscles will always be stronger when they are bigger.

You can get stronger just thinking about lifting.

The control group, who didn’t do anything, saw no gains in strength. The exercise group, who trained three times a week, saw a 28% gain in strength. No big surprises there. But, the group who did not exercise, but rather thought about exercising experienced nearly the same gains in strength as the exercise group (24%). Yes, you read that right!

Ten years ago, Guang Yue at the Cleveland Clinic reported that imaginary exercise increases the strength of finger muscles by up to 35%. Just five years ago, Kai Miller at the University of Washington, showed that imaginary exercise activates the same brain areas that are activated during real exercise.

Tendon strength is important too but it’s mostly genetic

If u can tap into your adrenal system more when working out it helps as well for strength I.e salt, stims etc.

You can gain strength without gaining muscle but you can't gain muscle without gaining strength.
The way you train makes you look stronger than you are or the other way around.

There's different types of muscle gains.

Slow twitch fibers for long term endurance, will not affect size or strength much but increases endurance.

Fast twitch fibers for muscle size and strength.

Glycogen increase, your actual muscle fibers don't improve as much as their energy stores, makes you bigger but only slightly stronger, increases strength endurance. Able to do more reps with relatively heavy weight. Your muscles get pumped with glycogen and water, increased muscle mass.

Nervous system gains, your ability to use your muscles to their full potential increases, improved technique and form to lift heavier.
Increased explosiveness. No actual size increase but improved strength.

With good training, you get all of them and it's rare to only get 1 type of gains.
