There have been time and time again in our life where being assertive actually make you not regret after despite of the initial feeling of anxiousness. More importantly, especially you are in the new environment where pushing out your comfort zone is a must, being assertive mean more network, better salary, more girls, more opportunities. You see there are so many positive outcomes but just stay away from politic or religious topic and you are gucchi. On the contrary, being meek mean you are missing opportunities, other men taking advantage of you, women disrespect you... you see this soy society trying to mold us into soy by making us feel guilty despite it is what we think is right.

No, it means having consistency in the way you be behave, and in this case specifically as to how you act when you have been wronged or have an opportunity with some risk involved. I could put this down much more eloquently, but given your stupid example, it should suffice. Most people refer to this as possessing character.
