Awkward on phone

Why is it when i talk to people on the phone i'm much more awkward than irl, irl i can just talk normally but on the phone i get weird tones of voice and have a harder time forming good sentences?

How to fix this?
It's not always like that but sometimes it surprises me.

This could be a big part of it, on the phone i can't see their expressions or body language and it makes them hard to read if i don't know the person.
It would have been so easy to be low inhibition since child rather than still struggling with it in my 20s. Shyness is like a disease.
