In Romania some people used to have this stuff back in the communist era because there were frequent power blackouts to save electricity, so they would have a backup energy source, those old-fashioned lead-acid battery were less efficient but couldn't explode.

No it’s not. What you see there is thermal runaway, leaving it on charge is quite literally adding fuel to the fire.

Given his constant looking back & forth I’d wager he either built that himself or modified the battery management system or the battery cells are completely worn. If he had held the battery whilst it was charging this would not have happened as the heat coming from the pack would be an obvious sign failure was imminent.

Just lithium, it can burn and explode quite vigorously. Some cheap Chinese batteries don't have protection circuits to reduce costs and accidents like this can happen.
