A 31-year-old Malian man was sentenced to prison for a sexual assault committed on July 6 in Gisors, northeast of Eure.

The evening of July 6, 2025, it’s 10:30 p.m. when Élodie*, 22 years, arrives home, at Gisors, in the north-east of Eure, after a day of work. In front of her front door, as night falls, she sees a man coming in her direction. As he enters the impasse that leads to his accommodation, she tells him that he has no right to be here, because the property is private. There, the thirty-year-old asks him for a glass of water. She refuses. He then asks her: "Are you married or single? "then places his hand on the young woman’s shoulder.

"I thought he was going to rape or kill me"

This is where a scene of incredible violence begins: the man pushes open the front door imposes itself by force in housing, follows the young woman to the bathroom where she was trying to take refuge. Ignoring his victim's cries, he holds her on the ground, places his hands around her neck, the strangle, touches her pubis over clothes... Three minutes of horror which end with the departure of the attacker, without a word. "I thought he was going to rape me or kill me", the victim told the police.

In front of the gendarmes, he explains having experienced a similar story in Hauts-de-Seine, without it going that far. "Love cannot be controlled. I can't tell you if it can happen again or not. I have no control over the future, he assures them.

The psychiatrist who met the defendant emphasizes "his criminological danger "his immaturity", "his limited intelligence", "a cultural gap" and "the absence of empathy towards the victim".

In court, the Malian does not make this portrait lie. If he describes himself as someone who is "not fundamentally evil", he is incapable of realizing the seriousness of the acts he has committed. "I know it’s against the law, like adultery. That a man should not go with a woman who is not his", he says.

"The problem isn’t that you’re going with another woman. It's because you're violating his freedom. A woman is not a sexual object", continues the audience president Bertrand Brusset. The words seem to slip over the defendant like a raincoat. The discrepancy is staggering. The man is light years away from understanding the notion of consent, even if he claims to "respect women a lot". "I didn’t mean to do any harm", he adds.

But the damage is done. Élodie was "a 22-year-old girl who flourished in her work", describes MRe Laura Riauté, who represents the victim in court. When she had just "taken flight", she returned to live with her parents and now has "reluctance when she meets a man". She is on sick leave, on anxiolytics.

"When we look at the facts, we are not not far from the attempted rape ", insists for his part deputy prosecutor Laëtitia Mimaud when requesting five years in prison as well as a permanent inadmissibility.

The defendant agrees: "When you make a mistake, you pay", he believes. The court reduces the sentence to three years in prison with the definitive ban from French territory.
