Being popular within an art community (note that art isn't just painting/music etc. Even things like digital stuff, games even youtube etc are now considered art by some people) is more about how popular you are as a character among the other members of the community rather than about the actual art itself. And getting popular itself is largely about sucking dick and/or circlejerking with other members by parroting the things that's already popular to say. This has been my experience as a digital artist. I won't claim that I am the greatest artist (lol no) but I have still noticed it. The quality if your art is completely secondary to how well liked you are by the big names. What counts as good art is also often arbitrary and based on elitist bullshit rather than any actual objective fact.
