On average yes, looks have an observable effect, but in this bubble people exaggerate it all the time.
They usually argue backward, starting from what they want to believe, instead of assessing reality chronologically, and unbiased.
It’s a way to rationalise past negative experiences and see a universal factor (and solution) in them.

Look at the actual data, outside dating contexts, the impact of looks is far smaller than most here assume.

Probably irrelevant since it’s anecdotal, but I absolutely never assumed someone to be intelligent due to their looks, nor did I actively seek the company of good-looking people.
