Benefits of Different Skin Treatments
by @tigrxs

Skin treatments are procedures that improve the appearance of your skin and are typically stronger and more effective than traditional skincare. These can treat common issues such as acne scars, acne, blackheads, etc.

Microneedling
Microneedling involves poking tiny holes the skin with needles. These small holes make your body produce more collagen and elastin. It can also help with acne, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is quick, they’ll apply a numbing cream on your face and then use the machine, which might result in bleeding. Unfortunately, microneedling only gives a minor difference and takes multiple sessions to see results, typically 4 to 6 with a recovery time of a few days to a week but will only cause a bit of redness and minor pain. The price is $350 a session.

There are other forms of microneedling and these include:

Radiofrequency microneedling
This is normal microneedling but use Radiofrequency to heat up the area to stimulate collagen and cause the skin to tighten.

PRP (Platelet-Rich-Plasma) microneedling
This is also referred to as the vampire facial for obvious reasons, it involves them drawing your blood which is then spun in a centrifuge machine to extract the plasma. This plasma is then used with the microneedling and releases growth factors which stimulate new growth and tissue. It also has a quicker recovery time and targets deeper layers of skin.

Microneedling can also be done by yourself at home and is much cheaper, there are a few variants of at home microneedling. These include the cheaper derma rollers/derma stamps to professional ones. I’d recommend to not go too deep as it can be risky especially if you're doing it yourself.

Red-light therapy
Red light therapy exposes your skin to low levels of red light and penetrates between 1-2mm of your skin. It helps stimulate collagen and can help with acne, skin texture, firmness, fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. It also has evidence of helping with skin cancer. It only gives minor differences and there are a lot of fake red light therapy masks and lamps, make sure it has 630-700nm. The treatment typically last 10-30 minutes and has no side effects and can be used often. You can get it done professionally but is a waste of money when you can just buy your own.

CO2 laser
There are multiple types of CO2 laser, the first one is CO2 laser resurfacing. During the treatment the epidermis (the top layer of your skin) Is destroyed and the dermis (the middle layer of your skin) is heated up which stimulates new collagen fibers. When the skin heals it will be firmer and smoother skin will replace the old skin. Another type is fractional CO2 laser and the difference is that it leaves gaps of healthy skin (about 60% to 85%). This keeps the recovery times lower. However, both have the same benefits which include tighter skin, removing wrinkles, Improved elasticity, and increased skin thickness. This gives major results and is one of the stronger skin treatments and should be done only by a professional and costs about $500 a session and you’ll typically need 2-4 spaced out 6-8 weeks apart for maximum results. However, it can cause scarring, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, temporary swelling, and temporary redness.

caution, do not use if:
  1. pregnant
  2. on accutane
  3. you have dark skin or are tanned
  4. treatment with blood thinners
  5. history of scarring

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are applied to the top layer of skin and cause peeling and after the skin grows back smoother and they are used to treat wrinkles, discoloured skin and scars. Chemical peels have multiple strengths, the stronger the chemical peel the deeper it goes and requires fewer sessions but is more painful with a longer recovery. Strong chemical peels should be used for deep wrinkles and scars. However, it can cause scarring, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, temporary swelling, temporary redness, and temporary scabbing. They cost $500 for deep peels and require one session.

caution, do not use if:
  1. pregnant
  2. on accutane
  3. have kidney, heart, or liver issues
  4. you have dark skin or are tanned
