Just buy something from the late 90s or early 00s, golfs are pretty nice imo. Bonus points if you buy a car that just barely doesn't work, a lot of people can't be bothered to repair their car when it doesn't pass an inspection and practically give it away. My friend who knows very little about cars bough a ford focus like that for $300. He fixed the breaks and a busted exhaust pipe and it works like a charm
