Kinda like how you throw a ball straight up in the air it has positive velocity and negative acceleration

I get that, but is there any reason to believe the expansion of universe should be decreasing in acceleration? The timeline isn't known, we could simply be in a very beginning phase and nowhere near the peak rate of expansion.
