Tl;dr: Should I stay with braces or attempt bimax?
Background:
I am currently like 9 months into braces and soon going to get elastics and tooth implant (born with missing premolar on lower jaw).
But I’m going to have a gap semester for uni and have a couple of months to spare and money to afford the surgery.
My ortho claims that I don’t need surgery and that the tooth implant + elastics would be enough for my case (edge to edge).
Now the question:
Now my question is if I should acc consider bimax or not, since i most likely wouldn’t get this much time for recovery for the next 3~4 years. Is it even worth it considering the ortho says my case is completely fixable with just orthodontics?

Your ortho doesn't know about ideal chin projection, just the ideal bite

Why even ask this question when you should just wait and see whether ur satisfied or not

I understand that seeing this to the end and then going the surgery route is more reasonable, but honestly i want to ascend asap and just forget about looksmaxxing entirely. But at the same time i dont necessarily wanna drop thousands on a surgery thats not even going to satisfy me.

Also i prolly wont be able to get surgery any time after the gap semester becuz i would have no time and parents wont allow me to take another gap sem.

Not happening btw

Oh dang.
I thought i would alr be pretty prepared for bimax considering im on braces rn and haven’t had elastics to compensate my bite.
Ig i would only know once i get a consultation with a surgeon about it.

Orthodontist needs to create overbite for Bimax to be possible, and it actually is counterintuitive to use elastics now. Idk decide

Wouldn’t the elastics used to correct my edge-to-edge create an overbite? Also I was under the belief that you needed straight teeth for bimax and not protruding or reclined teeth

What do you mean by edge to edge

Yeah you do, but you need an overbite else how will surgeon move your jaw forward if your bite is ideal already, and if you do just the bsso, they can only move it by a few mm's if just the lower jaw, you could also do bsso+ genio. If problem is just lower jaw, if you have down grown maxilla then you will need Bimax, but everyone on the forum is retarded and tells everyone who's slightly recessed to do Bimax when they can get away with just bsso or just genioplasty

Wait till braces are done then proceed with Bimax.

I mean edge to edge like in the image. Its a slight underbite but none of my lower teeth protrudes further than upper teeth. So I prolly do have recessed maxilla tbh.

Sorry becuz im not well-versed in surgery but is bimax not the same as double jaw surgery (i think i heard this on clav’s tiktok)? And double jaw surgery advances both upper and lower jaw so if i already have straight teeth but not ideal alignment, I should be prepared for surgery no?

Im not disagreeing with u, just curious but can bimax not be performed during braces?
Becuz dont people usually get braces before and after surgery anyways? Whats the difference?

You need it to ensure that the teeth are properly aligned for optimal post surgical bite.

Is that bad though? does your jaw look recessed or whats the issue

What exactly do you want to do

It doesn’t look recessed but my maxilla is kinda flat. Also when i bite down only my incisors and molars touch. But ortho has said both of these will be improved by the end.

My mandible is pretty good so i would just expand the upper jaw. Today I called a reputable djs surgeon for consultation so we will see ig.
