based on athleticism, more short or tall height can be of advantage based on the sport

before the abundance of resources we have now it was opportune to be on the shorter side because of the need for less caloric intake to operate at the same capacity as someone taller

there's of course the fact that the taller you are the shorter your lifespan becomes

being short is advantageous in very harsh climates as well, the pygmies are a great example (average male is 4'11). one of the main reasons they're short is due to thermoregulation. short stature helps regulate heat.

tldr it depends on your environment what's biologically optimal. in the west it's around 6'2-6'4 because of culture and such
