Lights smarter nlgga. When he lost his memory he was a better investigator than L and stupefied him several times while they tracked down the other Kira. When he gained his memory back, he manipulated a death god into killing L for him while L came up with no defense. And this is while Light was just a teenager still learning the ropes and making mistakes constantly which L capitalized on. L was a full grown man with multiple cases already under his belt, he was still surpassed by Light. The adult Light from the second half would make short work of L, his gambits at that point became ridiculous.
