hi everyone, I want to know your opinion. I'm going to the dentist tomorrow to find out about braces because my teeth are crooked. Can my jaw move back or forward? Are there any alternatives to braces and their consequences?

dont get regular braces they commonly cause recession, alternative is damon braces which dont cause recession

Try to get palate expansion throw marpe or mse first and then demon braces in worst case regular or retainers then

John here, your jaw can move forward or backward depending on what they do, but most of the time with regular braces they are trying to pull everything back to make your teeth straight, so this would consist of retracting your maxilla and mandible, which can make your lower third look shorter, your chin more recessed, and your side profile turn into absolute shit.

YES, there are alternatives and they consist of these methods:

1. Ask for a palatal expansion (MSE, MARPE, or DNA appliance) before any retraction.
-This widens the maxilla, gives way more room for teeth, and will objectively move the jaw slightly forward. You will get decent forward growth + a wider smile from this if you use this one.

2. Non-Extraction braces or clear aligners (WITH FORWARD MECHANICS!!)
-Some orthos (especially those who focus on forward-grown/airway-focused ones) avoid extractions and use temporary anchorage devices (TADs) or class III mechanics to protract instead of retract *This one is so much better for facial aesthetics.)

3. Myofunctional therapy + Mewing aggressively during treatment.....
-Even with braces (if you get them) you can mew extremely hard 24/7 and do proper tongue posture exercises, you can fight against retraction and sometimes gain slight forward growth *however I wouldn't recommend this one as much since there is a chance the braces will absolutely mog you and slam your face backwards :feelswah:*

Is 19 too old for palate expansion? I'm worried about the potential dangers since my jawbone might have already fused

Get mse or marpe first

traditional braces can affect and limit forward growth, damon braces are known not to restrict growth

go get it checked by a orthodontist to see if you have any growth in your skull bones
