Some basic things to those who are unaware.

These are three calibers most commonly used.

7.62 NATO, 5.56mm and 9mm.

The kinetic energy of the bullets

9mm: 7.45g, velocity = 407m/s or 455 ft lb
5.56mm: 4g, Velocity = 864m/s or 1328 ft lb
7.62mm: 10g, Velocity = 833 m/s or 2437 ft lb

So because the bullet is going down range much faster, the 5.56mm round has almost 3 times the energy of a 9mm pistol round. The 7.62mm NATO round has over six times the energy.

Why is it important. Law enforcement around the world uses 9mm as standard because it proceed least amount of damage with decent stopping someone without causing collateral damage or killing him instantly. You can survive it if it doesn't hit your vital organs. 5.56 and 7.62 are both reserved generally reserved for military because of their power. 7.62 is guaranteed to kill you if it hits any part of your upper body without a vest

Controversy

Brazil police generally uses .40 S&W or 9mm but for favelas or should I say when they are trying to catch a Brazilian criminal who isn't white. They use thr 7.62 mm. In all the favela raids thr Brazilian cops have used 7.62mm NATO rounds with a full intention to kill. They weren't trying to bargan, weren't trying to stop, they weren't trying to bring them out alive. They were there to massacre and terminate them. They were there with one simple goal that is to kill. There's clear evidence that police used lethal force on purpose. These raids were nothing more than state sponsored murder missions

Law enforcement around the world uses 9mm as standard because it produces the least amount of damage and is the most human way of stopping someone without killing him.
That does not make sense bhai. A 9mm will kill with ease, it is by no means a safe option. And that is a pistol caliber and the other two are rifle calibers. 9 mm is the most popular pistol caliber, so it makes sense why its the favorite of LEO around the world. All cops use rifles when the going gets tough, in Serbia they use an AK variant M70 chambered in 7.62x39, in the USA they use ARs in 5.56 NATO.

I didnt say 9mm is not deadly and all cops around the world use rifles when things escalate no one's denying that. But in Brazil, the issue isn’t just about using rifles in high-threat scenarios it’s how and where those rifles are being used. In favelas the Brazilian police aren't just β€œescalating” with rifles they’re rolling in with 7.62mm NATO rounds, a full-blown battle rifle caliber, and they’re using them with clear intent to kill not to control or arrest. This isn’t standard escalation like a SWAT team with an AR-15 this is deployment of military-grade force in poor, neighborhoods, without warning. That’s not routine policing under pressure that’s state violence disguised as law enforcement, and it wouldn’t be tolerated in thr west.

Interesting, I have never considered how caliber choise can be a sign of state violence. I guess you are right, if they rolled up in Belgrade with .50 BMGs people would feel more intimidated than if they used some AK variant, even if the variant was full auto but of lesser caliber.

the reasoning is that cartel in favelas is also armed with rifles so police has to step up in firepower

but nowadays cartel is too widespread even a lot of cops are involved in cartel activities, only a revolution would solve the issue
