Depression is not a thing invented by the media, it's a real thing and you're uneducated and inexperienced if you truly believe that.
If you don't feel any empathy for him then so be it, you can't do anything about it.
The only thing you can really do is to listen and making him focus on the good sides of life. Just being positive around him will make things easier, but in the end it's his responsibility to make it out of this hole.
