I suspect it has to do the combination of having fairly good infras and paranasals, low set cheekbones, but a somewhat recessed nasal base(three things that don't go together in most contexts).

I don't think this is a fair gripe. As someone who has sort of the same problem, it is also caused to one extent or another by the underlying bone structure as well as the lighting conditions. Laid's undereye cheeckbones protude more than the guy on the right, so you can see the outline of the eye socket. The other guy's under eye bones don't protrude as much, so you don't get that effect. But if you direct frontal lighting I think Laid would look better, because the lighting in the pic accentuates the undereye area.
