Can I go outside with retinol?

I know this is a stupid question before I even ask it, but say I put on retinol 4 hours ago; can I apply sunscreen then and go out if it's a cloudy day? Maybe this is not optimal, but how bad is it, really? My face is still a little bit oily from when I applied it.
