no determinism isnt concerned with ideas of society like sexual success. its much broader than that. it just means everything can be explained by physical laws, so you can supposedly calculate what the universe will look like at any point in time using its current state.

First of all YOU are your brain, so yeah of course after self awareness you can control your thoughts.
A better question is: are all your thoughts a result of nature?
No, upon reaching a certain level of intelligence you aquire the capacity of abstract thinking, from that point you're able to reach conclusions based on things that don't really exist physically (Example: Reason), therefore they're exterior to your own brain and not chemicals.
